Hengky Irawan spared from jail - A man who tried to put hydrochloric acid in a lube dispenser at a gay sex club will be spared jail. Hengky Irawan, 62, underwent a psychiatric assessment after being accused of administering poisons with intent to cause pain, entering a licensed premises to commit an indictable offense and intentionally or recklessly damaging the dispenser.
He had gone to sex club Aarows in Rydalmere, Sydney, earlier this year when he opened the dispenser, broke a security seal.
No one was harmed.
Hydrochloric acid is a strong, corrosive acid. The scars are permanent.
Prosecutor Nathan Blatch called it a ‘textbook example of motivation for hatred of people. [He] knows it to be a place where sexual intercourse takes place’.
However, magistrates were not convinced it was a hate crime.
Irawan’s defense said he suffered from mental illness and was undergoing medical consultations’.
Magistrate Beverley Schurr said: ‘It was directed towards patrons at the nightclub because he felt aggrieved about being kicked out earlier in the year. ‘It was ‘not about their sexual orientation [it was because he was] angry about being excluded himself.’
